Young offenders: DfES plan for school places to stay open

Young people in custody could have a place kept for them at school for up to a year under Department for Education and Skills proposals.

Schools are legally obliged to delete young people in custody from theirregisters after they have been absent for four weeks, if they cannotconfirm they are receiving alternative education.

But after reports that young offenders were encountering difficulties infinding school places after their release, youth offending services anda report by the Audit Commission suggested leaving pupils on theregister. As a result, a consultation on updating regulations on pupilregistration has proposed an increase in the permitted period ofabsence.
