Young mentally ill fear seeking help

Health
Mentally ill young people in rural Wales are reluctant to ask GPs for help because they fear gossip about them will spread around their community, according to research.

The study by Mind Cymru said schools and surgeries need to do more to promote mental health services and address the stigma associated with conditions.

More than a Number: A Study into Young People's Experiences of Mental Health Services in Rural Wales was commissioned by the Big Lottery Fund as part of its Mental Health Matters grants scheme. Barbara Wilding, chair of the Mental Health Matters committee, said: "We hope it will promote discussion about the role of agencies in helping people enjoy improved mental health."
