The figures, released in the House of Commons last week, show that 10 children aged between one and four went missing from care in the 12 months to March 2008. At least one child under-one also went missing, although the exact number was not disclosed.
Sue Cotton, strategy manager for children in care at charity Action for Children, said she was shocked by the statistics. "These children have obviously not had the required safety and security measures in place to go missing at that age. It begs the question, are monitoring systems, which are geared up for older children, really looking after the younger ones?"
