Working in London: Analysis - Employers rise to the staffingchallenge

Providers of children's services in London face big challenges in tackling long-standing staff shortages in a highly competitive market. Fay Schopen investigates.

A flick through Time Out or a trawl of the web's travel sites leaves youin no doubt that London is a world-class city. Its hugely diversepopulation, cutting-edge creative scene and top-rated restaurants, shopsand leisure facilities make the capital an exciting place to live, workor study.

But according to the Employers' Organisation for local government, theaverage vacancy rate for social care posts in the capital is oftendouble the national figure. Its recently published annual social careworkforce survey reveals that turnover rates are higher in London, withchildren's social workers the largest group affected by recruitmentdifficulties.

These statistics reveal the recruitment and retention challenges of thecapital, affecting both potential staff and employers.
