Workforce: Childcare could save NHS millions

Cash-strapped NHS trusts could save millions by offering childcare support to staff, a report on how the childcare strategy has worked in southwest London has said.

The report by the South West London Strategic Health Authority foundtrusts were making significant savings by offering childcare vouchersand salary sacrifice schemes.

It also showed that spending on childcare paid dividends by improvingstaff retention. Overall, the report says the NHS could save more than300m a year.

Co-author Ann Munday said the key to the strategy's success wasdedicated childcare co-ordinators. But there are fears that co-ordinatorposts are being cut by trusts desperate to save money.
