Work Wise: This is what I do - Frances Mott, Play therapist,Playtime

1 min read
Play therapy is like adult therapy but carried out through the medium of play, because children can't talk about their problems in the way adults can.

Play is a way for children to process information, tell you what's goingon in their lives or a way to solve problems for themselves. It's thebest kind of therapy for some children because it uses metaphor.

Some children don't actually know how to play, so part of the job is toteach them how to do it in the first place.

You can use a number of techniques including art, music, story tellingand sand play. They can all be used to communicate in a non-verbalway.

Play therapy can be used to help children with all sorts of issuesincluding abuse, domestic violence, bereavement, conduct disorder orfamily break-ups. Usually I work with children up to 13, but I haveworked with some aged up to 16.
