Children with movement difficulties are less likely to choose physical activities in their leisure time or to participate fully in PE at school and, as a result, are at greater risk of obesity and other health problems. They also risk social exclusion because they find it hard to play games among their peers, or are teased for their awkwardness.
The authors of this book are an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist with many years experience working with young people with motor-coordination difficulties. Chapters cover activities such as cycling, swimming, skipping, ball games and skating. The authors start by describing some of the skills used during each activity, and then offer tips on how children can develop those skills. Finally, they describe many different games to play, listing safety points and equipment required, and giving contact details for equipment suppliers.
