The Taking Part survey also found that 95 per cent of the same group engaged in some sort of sporting activity outside of physical education lessons. The researchers found that 94 per cent of children had engaged in both cultural and sporting activities over the time period.
Although the survey is classed as a national statistic, figures are based on 2,918 face-to-face interviews. But Janine Young, head of participation at the National Children's Bureau, believes the figures seem too high: "Vulnerable groups of children and young people constantly tell us that they don't have access to sports and recreational facilities."
