What does it mean? Schemas are patterns of behaviour that children demonstrate when they are exploring the world and trying to find out how things work. Some particularly common schemas among early years children are transporting - carrying objects or being carried from one place to another; rotation - turning, twisting or rolling themselves or objects; containing - putting themselves, objects or materials into different containers; and envelopment - covering themselves, objects or a space.
Author Tina Bruce identified the importance of recognising schemas among young children in her book Early Childhood Education. Bruce says that by identifying a child's schemas it is possible to plan their learning in ways that most interest them.
