Work and families bill: Government policies on parental leavedisappoint campaigners

1 min read
New policies on parental leave and flexible working could prove more damaging than doing nothing, research published today has warned.

It comes on the day the Government is expected to reveal its plans forthe Work and Families Bill, including increased scope for fathers totake paternity leave.

And it follows a consultation, which drew more than 200 responses fromemployers, unions and charities representing families and workingparents.

This view is backed by the Institute forPublic Policy Research's Daddy Dearest: Active Fatherhood and PublicPolicy report, which argues unpaid paternity leave is virtually uselessas few fathers will take it.

It says a whole month of parental leave should be set aside exclusivelyfor fathers and this should be accompanied by substantial increases inpaternity pay.
