Women dominate qualifying courses

The number of women studying professionally recognised youth work qualifications continues to outstrip men by almost two to one.

The latest figures for September 2009, produced by the National Youth Agency (NYA), show that for the second year in a row, males accounted for precisely 37 per cent of the total number of new recruits.

Overall, the numbers of students starting professionally validated youth work courses fell from 1,470 to 1,277.

The NYA attributes the decrease to the closure of nine foundation and diploma programmes ahead of the move to make qualified youth workers study to degree level from this month.
