'Wilful neglect' proposals raise fears over damage to social work

Children's services leaders say the government's plans to extend wilful neglect sanctions of up to five years in prison to social care and education professionals will harm joint working and deter many entering the sector.

Amid the deluge of policy announcements that made up the government's action plan on child sexual exploitation, the headline-grabber was undoubtedly proposals to jail social workers for five years by extending the offence of "wilful neglect".

In response to concerns that professionals and politicians in Rotherham and elsewhere have for years failed to act on known abuse, the government will consult on extending the new criminal offence of "wilful neglect" in adult social care and health settings to children's social care, education and elected lead members within local authorities.
