Why are Parents rubbish at play?

6 mins read
Parents have often forgotten how to play. Jo Stephenson reports on a number of projects that are designed to help them re-learn how their children have fun.

Dinnika likes playing with her mum, but prefers playing with her friends. "If you're playing with your mum, you've only got one person to play with and it's boring," the seven-year-old explains.

Kian, 6, says he doesn't play with his mum and dad that much and would like to play with them more. "When I do play with them it's fun," he says.

Sometimes, however, his mum makes him do sums. "I don't like that," he adds.

Dinnika and Kian are not alone in finding fault with their parents' ability to play. An NOP survey for today's (4 August) National Playday celebrations found that, while most parents claim they play with their children every day, the majority of children say that they never or hardly ever play with mum and dad.
