
These have involved 2.5 million young people engaging in youth initiatives, volunteering and exchanges, as well as intercultural training and learning opportunities for youth workers.
The cynics can, of course, still have a field day. The numbers of young people who have taken part is a drop in the ocean when set in the context of the overall youth population of Europe, which stands at 100 million. Some routinely suggest that only the more privileged and motivated seize the chance to participate, leaving more vulnerable and marginalised young people still excluded. The most cynical allege that the programmes are little more than a gravy train for a set of connected youth practitioners and their "in-crowd" of young people.
