Welfare: Reforms could boost childcare

Proposed welfare reforms could result in extra funding for childcare, the Department for Work and Pensions revealed last week.

A Government-backed review of the benefits system suggests payingprivate and voluntary sector organisations to provide individualisedservices for people on benefits (Children Now, 7-13 March).

In theory, this could include childcare services for lone parents, aDepartment for Work and Pensions spokesman told Children Now lastweek.

"(The) review looks at how the sector can provide bespoke packages ofsupport. Childcare could be part of that," he said.

But the Child Poverty Action Group said the Government should put anyextra money directly into childcare rather than through the proposedsystem.
