Teenagers are playing a central role in shaping communities across the country through the Young People Friendly Neighbourhoods scheme. Derren Hayes drops in to see one of the projects in action

Burton Latimer in the heart of Northamptonshire has something of the Wild West about it. Surrounded on all sides by flat farmland, a single main road runs through the centre of the town with its collection of small shops, a supermarket, pub and the Burton Latimer Band Club. There’s not quite tumbleweed blowing across the high street, but the town, once a centre for shoemaking, is pretty sleepy.

In recent years, there has been some tension between the wider community and young people due to the lack of facilities for them. But as dusk descends, the eerie quietness is now punctured by shouting, screaming and laughter coming from the only lit room of the civic centre, a former GP surgery bought by the town council two years ago.
