We need a minister dedicated to prevent our young becoming Neet

2 mins read Education
The Millennium kids - those young people born in the year 2000 - came into the world in a period of huge expectation, aspiration and investment in education. This generation will be turning 15 this year and embarking on their first steps into adulthood.

But a study we produced last year found that one in five of them will face a period not in education, employment or training (Neet).

The long-term scarring to a young person's future life prospects of a period being Neet is dramatic. Aside from the impact on mental health and wellbeing, the economic effects can be devastating.

A person who spends just six months Neet in their youth could, by their 40s, lose up to £225,000 compared with graduate peers who have never been Neet.

If we do not intervene now to prevent them from falling out of education, employment and training, we risk continuing to let them down long into their adult lives.
