The Recovery project service will use eight young volunteers to befriend other young people and build up their confidence to use the US Mach drop-in centre in Machynlleth, Powys.
Christina Perry, Recovery's 24-year-old co-founder, said: "I've suffered from socialphobia in the past. We want to empower young people to come along through one-to-one work."
The project is backed by 1,450 from the Mental Health Small Grants Scheme and will be run by Hafal, a sister organisation of severe mental illness charity Rethink.
Julie Cannon, team leader for Hafal, added: "As part of the new work, aimed at 18- to 25-year-olds, volunteers will go to the young people and use their interests to help motivate them."
