Wales: Crime prevention schemes launched

1 min read

The youth inclusion projects (YIPs) are backed by New Opportunities Fund money and are designed to steer young people who are at risk of offending away from crime.

Rhyl's YIP will cover the south and southwest wards of the town, while Swansea's will work in the Penderry and Mynyndd-bach wards.

Mick Hartley, acting manager of Rhyl's project, said: "Rhyl has the highest level of deprivation in Wales, so the YIP seemed a good idea. The biggest part of its work will be slotting young people into mainstream community services."

The New Opportunities Fund awarded both projects 225,000, to last until March 2006. Local youth offending teams will run the YIPs, which start work on 1 April, bringing the total number of YIPs in England and Wales to 72.
