WAGES: Young people set to get equal pay

The Government has given the commission the green light to look into the feasibility of introducing minimum wages for under-18s, a right the TUC union body campaigned for last week.

Adair Turner, chairman of the commission, said: "We are pleased the Government has said it will ask us to look at the advantages and disadvantages of a minimum wage for 16 and 17-year-olds. We believe there is a case for introducing a minimum wage for this age group."

The wages advisory body would work with government departments to look at the relationship between the minimum wage, education and training and financial support.
