Vox Pop: Should faith schools be allowed to tailor sex education?

2 mins read Education Health
MPs have agreed that sex education in England can be taught in way that reflects a school's "religious character".

YES - Antonia Tully, head of Safe at School campaign, Society for the Protection of Unborn Children

If a religion teaches that abortion and contraception are wrong because they are physically harmful and emotionally damaging, then schools of that faith should not be obliged to promote these to the children.

Sex and relationship education in faith schools should be an opportunity to promote self-control and self-worth among pupils, a far richer vision than how to avoid pregnancy and sexual diseases. A growing body of research shows that access to contraception and abortion does not reduce teenage pregnancy and abortion rates. Faith schools should not be obliged to contribute further to this failed strategy.
