Vox Pop - Are body scanners a good alternative to strip-searches?

2 mins read Youth Justice
Young offender institutions are installing body orifice scanners as an alternative to strip-searching young offenders.

YES - REBECCA NADIN, CAMPAIGNS OFFICER, PRISON REFORM TRUST

Strip-searching children entering custody, a third of whom have come from being in care, and many of whom will have experienced physical abuse often leading to self-harm, merely compounds what is already a traumatic experience.

We would cautiously welcome any move which seeks to address these fundamental concerns. Ensuring the physical and mental welfare of all children entering custody must be a priority, second only to reducing the use of child imprisonment in the first place.

We trust the Youth Justice Boards's review into the use of full searches will carry these concerns forward and we look forward to its publication later this summer.
