Official Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures show that numbers of assailants, victims and those involved in scuffles have risen significantly since 2000.
The statistics reveal that among 15- to 17-year-olds in prison there were 1,869 assailants who committed either actual bodily harm or grievous bodily harm in 2008 compared with 986 in 2000 - a rise of 90 per cent.
Numbers of victims rose from 709 in 2000 to 1,242 in 2008 - a rise of 75 per cent.
Numbers of "prison fighters" - juveniles involved in fights where there was no clear victim - stood at 4,248 in 2008, more than double the 2000 figure of 1,882.
