VETERAN YOUTH WORKERS: Better with age

Youth work is a stressful profession that takes its toll over time. Helen Gregory talks to four veterans to find the secrets of longevity in working with young people

Despite this, there are still plenty of veterans around in both the statutory and voluntary sectors.

Since 2000, the National Association of Clubs for Young People has given out 30 awards to youth workers who have worked for 40 years and 38 awards to those notching up half a century.

However, there are certainly fewer older workers than there were years ago - especially ones that haven't been lured into management.

The reason? Possibly the pressure, which can make trying to balance family life with working at weekends and at night tougher as you age. As Tom Wylie, chief executive of The National Youth Agency, notes: "Kids work on a different timetable to older people."
