Union criticises abolition of GTC

The abolition of the General Teaching Council will damage the profession, diminishing its ability to engage with the Every Child Matters agenda, a trade union leader has warned.

John Chowcat, general secretary of children's services union Aspect,criticised Education Secretary Michael Gove's announcement that heintends to bring forward legislation to scrap the council in theautumn.

He said: "The GTC has made great effort to bring together the topplayers in education to talk about issues including how teachingstandards can fit in relation to Every Child Matters."
