Underage drinking warnings ignored

1 min read Health
Government calls to curb underage drinking are falling on deaf ears because most people think it's not their problem, according to research published last week.

Use of Alcohol Among Children and Young People, published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, indicated that many young people and parents disassociate themselves from the issue, believing it is not a problem for themselves. "The high level of enjoyment from drinking itself, means communication and information about underage drinking is of low or very low interest," states the report.

The report suggested many parents and carers exacerbate the problem by failing to recognise their role in preventing under-age drinking. Justifications for excessive alcohol use included the argument that alcohol is not a drug and that young people learn by their mistakes.
