Report paints bleak picture of seaside towns prone to social breakdown, but recovery plans are under way.

A new report on British coastal towns has smashed the rose-tinted ideal many may have of seaside resorts brimming with fishing boats and quaint tea shops.

Although there are some exceptions, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) report says many coastal towns are struggling to keep their heads above a rising tide of social deprivation.

Coastal towns are now among the most educationally deprived parts of the country. Of the top 10 wards in England and Wales for 15- to 17-year-old pregnancy rates, four are in seaside towns. Job prospects for young people are poor and the signs are that the cycle of disadvantage could continue unless action is taken.
