In Birmingham, young people from Small Heath Youth Centre collected more than 500 in two days. Kalsoom Zubedah-Khan, senior area youth worker, said: "As soon as they came back after Christmas they wanted to act. They collected lunch money and shook cans for donations."
Youth centre attendee Nighat Parveen, 19, said: "We had a volunteer from Indonesia and we don't know if they are OK yet."
The centre is considering adopting an Indonesian orphan. Elsewhere, Y Care International has appealed for donations through YMCAs across the world and has received 30,000 in pledges from UK YMCAs. The money will go towards relief operations in the affected countries, where local YMCAs have been turned over to the aid effort. The Scout Association is also working to raise funds.
