Trust trials cancer text message idea

Health
Young cancer patients are testing specially adapted mobile phones to help manage the side effects of chemotherapy.

The initiative, funded by the Teenage Cancer Trust, allows young people to report their symptoms each day via a phone similar to a PDA.

Known as the Advanced Symptom Management System for Young People, the device asks questions about their symptoms. The information is sent to the medical team, who will send back a text message with advice.

Dr Faith Gibson, a senior lecturer in children's cancer nursing research at the Institute of Child Health, said the system could revolutionise care by giving young people extra support and helping medical teams track teenagers' reactions to treatment.
