The blueprint is still being developed by the Training and Development Agency and has not been made public yet. But it is understood that it neglects autism while mentioning other special educational needs including dyslexia.
The National Autistic Society is calling for the plan to be revisited to incorporate greater training on autism.
"We're concerned that initial proposals to improve teacher training in special educational needs will not include training on how to deal with autism," said Amanda Batten, the society's policy officer.
"We would say that a basic understanding of autism is a core skill and it should be included in initial teacher training. Every teacher should have a basic understanding of what autism entails, know how to adapt their classes and know when and how to get support."
