SAT tests have had too narrow a focus on intelligence levels and failed to bring out the best in bright pupils, according to latest research.
Academics at King's College London invited 800 13- and 14-year-olds of all abilities to carry out a series of logic and analysis tests that were also carried out by young people in 1976.
While a greater proportion of pupils performed well in the tests than in 1976, far fewer hit the top marks, which were only scored by those who showed a good level of skill in carrying out in-depth evaluation of problems.
The report says: "Compared with 1976 fewer go on to develop an interpretative and evaluative level of thinking."
