The Autumn 2007/Winter 2008 issue, guest edited by John Holmes of Newman College, Birmingham features ten articles by leading writers on youth work issues, most of whom are tutors within higher education establishments.
In his introduction, Holmes says the content does not represent a complacent view of qualifying courses but identifies the tensions and contradictions they are faced with.
Among the articles included in the journal Simon Bradford of Brunel University looks at the development of professional training for youth leaders; Mark Hammond of the University of Ulster explores cross-community youth work training in a divided and contested society; Carol Packham of Manchester Metropolitan University argues that training programmes are neglecting to give sufficient attention to the relationship of professional workers to volunteers and Tony Jeffs and Jean Spence of Durham University suggest that qualifying courses, as presently conceived, are facing an uncertain future. Youth & Policy is available on annual subscription at £28 for four issues (£14 for students). Contact NYA Sales on 0116 242 7427 or email sales@nya.org.uk for more information.
