Experiencing Youth Poverty: A Case Study

Government policies relating to youth poverty and youth work intervention have during the Thatcherite, Major and New Labour years since 1997, been noticeable by their absence. Current government initiatives such as the Myplace monies to fund a new generation of youth centres looks good but is debatable as to whether it will engage with many of the young people who are poor and who do not attend youth centres. It still remains the case that in 2007, 30 per cent of 18- to 21-year-olds, living in households below 60 per cent of median income, were deemed at risk of being in poverty and of the 1.5 million young adults aged 16 to 24 in low income households one million were single without children.
