YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY - KEITH POPPLE
There is little doubt that young people's experience of community in contemporary times is a different one to when Youth & Policy was launched in the early 1980s. Increasing authoritarian policies and practices to curb disadvantaged young people have been introduced as the impact of inequality from globalisation and neo-liberalism continues to bite.
At the same time our understanding of community has changed and we now recognise the complexity of the notions of community and neighbourhood. The complexity of life in a society like the UK means we have to consider community in different ways than we did 25 years ago. Young people can belong to a multiplicity of communities that are based upon, for example, ethnicity, religion, nationalism, gender, sexuality, age, disability and lifestyles.
