The National Youth Agency: My Place

1 min read
Myplace launched in April this year with 190m of government money over three years to kickstart the government's vision for improving youth facilities. In this series we look at a range of generic and specialist youth facilities to encourage ambition and vision in support of Myplace bids, linking each to one of the programme's 10 key principles.

THE DUKERIES YOUNG PEOPLE'S CENTRE, OLLERTON, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE YOUTH SERVICE

Key principle: Young people's outcomes - impacting on young people's lives, particularly those living within deprived communities and those who would not otherwise participate in positive activities.

The Dukeries Young People's Centre opened in February 2008 as the first of five new centres across the county, replacing a small club closed down two years ago. Prior to its opening, youth work in the area had been delivered largely through detached work. The Dukeries is a standalone centre, situated just outside the local secondary school grounds, so that young people who have been excluded can still access it. The single storey building offers large and small group meeting spaces alongside a cafe area and ICT room. It offers a range of activities and sessions including open evening, a young women's group, Duke of Edinburgh's group and a young parents' group, organised in conjunction with Sure Start. It also runs lunchtime drop-in sessions. There are plans to introduce a weekly film club and a range of trips, activities and projects are organised at weekends. It also has a strong focus on multi-agency work with partners including Connexions, Sure Start, the police and the antisocial behaviour co-ordinator.
