The National Youth Agency: My place

1 min read
Myplace launched in April this year with 190m of government money over three years to kickstart the Government's vision for improving youth facilities.

In this series we look at a range of generic and specialist youth facilities to encourage ambition and vision in support of Myplace bids, linking each to one of the programme's 10 key principles.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club

Key principle: Young people's outcomes - impacting on young people's lives, particularly those living within deprived communities and those who would not otherwise participate.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club opened its new premises close to the town centre in one of the top 10 per cent deprived wards in England in 2002. Attendance tripled in the first year and it now has over 3,000 visits from children and young people each week. While the club's first task is to offer high-quality seven nights-a-week universal services, it has developed a variety of targeted work too, including the Independence Group for young people with different physical and learning disabilities and a Deaf Club. Both groups are fully integrated into evening youth clubs. There is also a Just for Girls group - a Sunday afternoon session for young Muslim women and their female family members; outdoor adventure programmes; the E-Zone running sessions on financial skills; the v-team supporting volunteering opportunities; and an award-winning mentoring project. As one young person said: "If it wasn't for the club we'd be in our little groups, drinking on the streets and winding other people up."
