In this series we look at a range of generic and specialist youth facilities to encourage ambition and vision in support of Myplace bids, linking each to one of the programme's 10 key principles.
Newark and Sherwood Mobile Youth Project, Nottinghamshire Youth Service
Key principle: Accessibility - responding to local needs and overcoming barriers to enable all young people to access positive activities.
The mobile is one of a fleet of seven identical mobiles used throughout Nottinghamshire. They have been designed and fitted to a high specification, in consultation with young people, and are fully accessible to disabled young people. They have effective heating systems for winter use. The mobiles have been designed to be used flexibly with moveable seating and a moveable mid-section, and provide space for large amounts of equipment and paperwork so that young people's needs can be met on the spot. The Newark and Sherwood mobile operates four times a week in different locations, including one estate with a large Gypsy and Traveller community and the market place on market day, where it acts as an information shop. It is regularly used as a base for outreach work and is present at a range of community events, such as crime action week and an annual garden party. High-profile livery has raised the service's profile with young people, their communities and local politicians.
