The National Youth Agency: Federation conference on citizenship

1 min read
This year's conference of The Federation for Detached Youth Work will focus on detached youth work and the citizenship agenda.

Is detached work the last remaining medium for authentic democratic citizenship education - or has it been co-opted by policy makers as a foil for a more insidious form of citizenship "education" - one that has more to do with social control than democracy?

Other debates and training opportunities during the event will take issues such as participation, values, dilemmas, diversity, "Britishness", social inclusion, community cohesion, patriotism, identity and multiculturalism.

The conference, along with the Federation's AGM, will take place at the Britannia Hotel in Wiganfrom 8 to 10 November. For booking details contact Acomo Olule, administration and finance officer, on 0116 242 7490, email fdyw@nya.org.uk, or visit www.detached youthwork.info

The official launch of the Federation's new publication, Reconnecting Detached Youth Work: Guidelines and Standards for Excellence, takes place in Newcastle on 5 October. NYA chief executive Fiona Blacke will join author Graeme Tiffany for the event, hosted by Newcastle City Council Play and Youth Service and taking place at Newcastle Civic Centre from 2 to 4pm. The event is free and all are welcome. Register intention to attend with Acomo Olule at the address above.
