The National Youth Agency: Empowerment - Votes at 16 coalition urges MPs to get serious about reduction bill

1 min read
The National Youth Agency, as one of the founding members of the Votes at 16 Coalition, has been encouraging members of Parliament to attend the second reading of the Voting Age (Reduction) Bill.

The bill was launched at the Houses of Parliament on 4 June by MP Julie Morgan. She chaired a panel of speakers including MPs from the three main parties and a group of young people who argued in favour of votes at 16.

Responding to a young person's concern that his MP is not in favour of votes at 16, MP John Bercow said: " He is entitled to his view, but it does suffer from the disadvantage of being wrong."

National Youth Agency project officer Melody Hossaini said: "We have campaigned for the inclusion of 16- and 17-year-olds in democratic elections for a number of years. The bill is an opportunity to highlight the case for lowering the voting age in Parliament."
