Organised by sexual health charity fpa (formerly the Family Planning Association), Contraceptive Awareness Week was initiated in 1997 to raise awareness of the different methods of contraception and issues affecting contraceptive choice. The 2006 campaign will focus on awareness of so-called "long-acting reversible methods of contraception" (LARC). These methods are defined as those that do not have to be thought about on a regular basis.
A key aim of this year's campaign is to make young women in particular aware of the contraceptive options they have, and to encourage them to liaise with health professionals about them if necessary.
Men and women with questions about LARC or any other aspect of sexual health are encouraged to call fpa's confidential helpline on 0845 310 1334 Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm.
