Surprisingly, as an adult, I have been involved in an enormous range of sports and outdoor activities. I have always undertaken some form of exercise and still swim, cycle and run - not too far or fast, often accompanied by moans, but regularly. Exercise is important for all-round physical and mental health. In addition, sports provide an important means of social and personal development through friendship and challenge. I learned none of this at school: it took real life to help me work it out.
As more emphasis is put on sports and competition in the school curriculum, please can someone spare a thought for people like me? We need a strategy like that of ancient Greece. The first step is involvement to help us see that we can "have a go" and get something out of physical activity.
