This description of an inspirational teacher by Lorna Sage took me instantly back to secondary school. I could smell the chalk, the wooden floors and the school dinners. More importantly, I remembered my own Miss Roberts; she was a Miss Robinson, who helped me realise that I was a person with prospects for my future.

The school curriculum was narrow. As a kid from the council estate on the wrong side of town I lost touch with my previous local friends - overnight I had become "posh". My new schoolmates from the good side of town understood the system, had professional families and read the right newspapers. This was not an easy place for me.
