With the Youth Crime Action Plan due out next week, it has to be the publication of the crime and communities review. Led by Louise Casey, now the government's neighbourhood crime and justice adviser, the overriding priority in this Cabinet Office report is responding to "what the public wants". There are 32 proposals, several of which have already been adopted by government.

Punishment first - including visible community payback - and tougher sentences; preventative and rehabilitative interventions made available in addition to punishment; a clearer understanding of how the criminal justice system works; better parenting to reduce youth crime; and more activities and facilities for young people - especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
