The Coalition Agenda Insight: 'I'll still be doing this job in five years'

3 mins read Social Care Youth Work
In his first interview in government, Tim Loughton, the minister in charge of children's social care and young people's services, talks to Lauren Higgs about his priorities.

If Tim Loughton is disappointed about losing out to Sarah Teather on the children's minister role, he isn't showing it.

"I have retained virtually all the responsibilities I had on the shadow team, focusing on safeguarding, vulnerable children, children in care and youth services," says the Conservative junior children's minister. "I'm just itching to get on with it."

While admitting disappointment that former shadow children and families colleague Maria Miller has gone to the Department for Work and Pensions, he claims working with Teather, the only Liberal Democrat minister in the Department for Education, will be "rather exciting". Though she has little experience, he is working closely with her "to make sure she is up to speed".
