
The statistics, collected by Connexions services across England, measure the extent to which local authorities are offering the September Guarantee - a government pledge to provide every 16- and 17-year-old with a suitable place in education or training.
The figures also show that a further 16,500 school leavers aged 16 want to get a job but have been unable to find work. Children's minister Dawn Primarolo wrote to directors of children's services earlier this month urging them to address the problem. She said: "Without further action, there is a significant risk that these young people will become Neet in September. I urge you to contact them to discuss education and training options."
