Ten-year early help drive makes us believe we can transform lives

When I started out in children's services more than 30 years ago, I had high hopes that with hard work I could make a difference. Since then, the biggest learning curve has been to stop hoping.

Stay with me on this. During my career, I have worked with some truly excellent initiatives; from Sure Start and the Neighbourhood Nursery childcare expansion drive to developing Early Excellence centres and children's centres. Like many CYP Now readers, I have worked through decades of development and change, hoping to succeed in changing children's life chances.

But the stark reality is that despite the years of tireless work with some incredible programmes, the health and wellbeing of a child is often determined before they are born, with cycles of deprivation and dysfunction traversing from generation to generation. This is a key reason why programmes looking to early intervention are so vital. It's about shifting resources and energy away from treating children's problems to preventing them in all aspects of a child's life - from conception onwards - breaking the cycle and offering a real opportunity to make lasting improvements to children's lives.
