Teachers wary of in-school cameras

1 min read Education
Teachers have demanded more protection against the use of surveillance cameras in schools, arguing they pose a threat to privacy.

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) voted unanimously at its annual conference last week to examine the procedures put in place to protect teachers and pupils.

Peter Walker, a member of the union's executive committee and proposer of the motion, told CYP Now the government must address the issue.

"Cameras can be of use but only if there are very strict protocols as to how they are used," he said. "The government needs to address this issue seriously and, if needs be, develop legislation on how and for what purposes they should be used."

Malcolm St John-Smith, a member of the ATL's executive committee, said there were concerns that surveillance cameras, already a regular feature on school sites, could soon come into the classroom.
