The shooting of a 15-year-old boy at youth club The Crib Centre in Hackney last month left youth workers and young people in the area shocked. Youth managers decided to close the centre for two weeks and review security at the club to make sure it is safe.
While such shocking incidents are rare, consider using this example to start a wider discussion about how youth clubs can tackle serious incidents and prevent problem behaviour.
Many youth clubs draw up a code of conduct that young people sign before being allowed to enter the premises. This warns that breaches of the code can lead to a ban. Youth work experts recommend updating the code of conduct regularly to make sure it considers any emerging problems.
