SWANSEA: Praise lavished on improved services

Swansea's children's services have been praised highly in a joint review by the Audit Commission and the Social Services Inspectorate for Wales.

Services had improved in "most areas" in recent years, it said. They responded well to "high and urgent need" and were working effectively with the Youth Offending Team, leading to reductions in youth crime.

Practice was "generally thorough", and there was a "wide range of responsive and imaginative family support services", such as the Mayhill Family Centre.

The centre was praised for expanding its role beyond traditional daycare services to more focused work with families.

The report also highlighted the city and county's good access to fostering and adoption services, but said more specialist family support and placements were required to reduce the number of children who were being cared for and who had to live outside the county.
