Support for young parents

1 min read Early Years
Barking and Dagenham Foyer, Barking, east London

What is it? Run by housing association East Thames Group, the Foyer provides accommodation for 116 young people aged 16 to 24. Many of the residents have struggled with homelessness, unemployment, addiction, criminal activity and difficult family backgrounds.

What services does it offer? The purpose-built foyer includes a media suite, a health and wellbeing suite and a guidance centre run by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It also houses a creche for young parents.

How does the creche work? The creche is designed to be a hub for young parents - both residents and those from the surrounding community - where they can come with their children, typically aged up to two years. Parents interact with and provide further support for each other by sharing experiences. The creche is equipped with children's play equipment, educational toys and an area where young parents can take part in arts and crafts sessions with their children.
